PHD Presents The Real Cheeseburger Pizza!

Quikskoop™: Restoran IKEA – Alam Sutera, Tangerang

It has now been exactly two weeks since IKEA opened its doors for the first time in Indonesia. As a foodie, naturally my instincts would lead me to go for the canteen first rather than sightseeing the megastore with my wife like in 500 Days of Summer. Well, didn’t work that way though and here’s the story when I arrived at last.

It was the second day and it feels like a shopping mall during weekend. Everybody crowded the parking lot so quick to get the best spot to park nearby the entrance and there’s plenty of people already inside.

It’s good to see my wife’s big grin when she saw IKEA for the first time ever, live, and not through commercials or its famous catalogue. So, it took us a while to get ourselves right in the canteen and just as I expected, there’s a long line already.

IKEA Alam Sutra 2

IKEA had anticipated this of course. So they lined up the customers pretty neat and quick but that’s not the case with the kitchen. They ran out of the side dishes so quick and so I had to ask if they have salad or sandwich left, aside from the overpriced smoked salmon.

Luckily, a kitchen attendant came by to replenish the salad fridge. Me and a customer behind me got the remaining salad right away, and I saw clearly the disappointment with the rest of the competition just behind us. No salad, no sandwich, just the smoked salmon in the end for many of them.

IKEA Alam Sutra 4

We decided to have the meatballs (of course) and the salmon as our mains. Additionally I also took a full bowl for mushroom soup and off we head to pay and fill our glasses with soda and coffee.

There’s always a room to sit on the right wing if it gets full too quick on the main area and it’s a good thing that everything was air-conditioned well since IKEA always designs the restaurant with huge windows to get much of the sunlight.

IKEA Alam Sutra 3

We enjoyed the food a lot especially with the soup and the meatballs, thanks to the hunger mainly. The salmon was okay but I think it could be better. The salad was like regular salad you’d have in Pizza Hut, but I completely enjoyed the free flow drinks at a very reasonable price.

I figure that they won’t dare to charge the food at a really exorbitant price in overall since the furniture is apparently much more expensive than in Malaysia or Singapore, so I heard.

Well, it was a pleasure by the way to finally meet IKEA again and to finally introduce my wife with it. As for us, we’d love to visit again the canteen and try something else next time.

PS: Try also the snack bar right outside the cashier section. It is heavily queued but they got good snacks at a reasonable price plus there’s also a Swedish specialty snacks store beside it. Enjoy your visit and make peace with the crazy weekend, mind you!

Iconic: Ayam Goreng Suharti (The Foodie Magazine, June 2014)

Selling door-to-door has been a useful technique for many businesses. One lady who used this very effective technique to sell her, now famous fried chicken, is Ibu Suharti.

Ayam Goreng Suharti 4

In the 1960s, being a relative of Mbok Berek – famed for her fried chicken recipe, Ibu Suharti began her own fried chicken business and started selling around the neighborhoods of Yogyakarta alongside her husband. Business was never easy but yet the couple managed to save up enough money to set up their own restaurant in 1969.

The original restaurant on Jalan Adi Sucipto no. 208, Yogyakarta still stands, representing the five decade journey and how it has spread its wings to big cities around Indonesia. At first the restaurant was actually named as “Ayam Goreng Mbok Berek Baru”, but in the 1970s it was renamed as “Ayam Goreng Ny. Suharti”.

Ayam Goreng Suharti 1

Unfortunately for inexplicable differences, the couple had to split in the 1990s and that is why there are two restaurants which carry the similar name. Ibu Suharti decided to go without the Nyonya or “Ny.” and put her own photo on the signage of her restaurants, while the ex-husband uses the logo of two chicken face-to-face with each other with an “S” initial in-between.

Ayam Goreng Suharti 2

From the beginning, Ibu Suharti used only ayam kampung and despite it being smaller in size compared with the broilers, the chicken packs a really intense flavor that cannot be compared with any other fried chicken thanks to her particular recipe. The chicken comes whole or half portions and is golden color, signifying the perfection of the frying technique and the marination process. The chicken is also accompanied with the crispy kremes or flour and spices remnants used for the chicken. That certainly brings the chicken into a more complex umami flavor that no one would even dare to skip.

Additionally, Ayam Goreng Suharti also serves other delicacies such as buntil, gudeg, and the gurame complemented with her signature kremes or perhaps you may want to try the grilled chicken instead. For family dinners out, the usual Chinese-style stirfries are always there to please everyone and would make a fine addition to the fried chicken with extra kremes and sambal.

Ayam Goreng Suharti 3

We can safely say that Ayam Goreng Suharti has won the hearts of many Indonesians, I remembered a conversation with an ex colleague of mine some time ago. “When our family was poor, having Suharti’s fried chicken was like a royal treat. I remembered that we ate it little by little so we could enjoy it longer”, he said reminiscing his younger days many many years ago. Indeed, whenever we see Ayam Goreng Suharti, I also consider it as a timeless delicacy that will never be forgotten and suitable for special occasions only.

How about you?

Foodies Lists: Loving Hut (The Foodie Magazine, Jan 2014)

Loving Hut’s message to the whole world is all about peace, love and harmony, and most of all, to promote the healthy vegetarian way of life. Ching Hai, a spiritual master and entrepreneur who founded the restaurant chain has successfully brought Loving Hut around the world with hundreds of outlets and some of them of course, in Indonesia.

With its feminine brand design, yellow colored interiors and pictures of international celebrities who have adopted a vegan lifestyle decorating the restaurants, it’s not hard to find Loving Hut. Especially nowadays, the growth of Loving Hut in Indonesia has been very promising as it has opened numerous outlets in Jakarta and other cities.

Although all of the items are made with wholesome plant-based ingredients, there is no reason for the non-vegan to not stop by and enjoy the dishes. Each outlet of Loving Hut has a distinctive menu that incorporates many cuisines and leaves plenty of room to explore based on the original recipes as well. Notables on the menu are Chinese, Indonesian, Western, and a little bit of Vietnamese, together with healthy drinks and juices.

Loving Hut - Kung Pao

Interestingly enough, their soybean-based kung pao exactly tastes like the real thing and well-paired with vegetable dishes like stir-fried broccoli. Of course, other options like noodles, Indonesian rice dishes, and even pizza or steak are also there for you to pick. With the spirit to save the environment and to bring the sustainable diet for the earth, this might be the place to start the world’s food revolution.

Quikskoop™: Loving Hut

Yippeekiyay! Another healthy restaurant! I’m on fire with this genre lately right? Well, partly because it was an assignment for a certain magazine. Second, just recently a fellow foodie friend of mine went ‘astray’ to become a vegan. I figure, why don’t you start looking for these hidden organic jewels and start a trend by reviewing them? Regardless of these excuses, on any circumstances aside from my religious restrictions, let’s do the foodie adventure, shall we?

For several years, I have been passing through this vegan restaurant both in Plaza Semanggi and Kampung Melayu vicinity in East Jakarta. Honestly I looked at it condescendingly and even underestimated it. Probably it’s because they put pictures of old and new celebrities all over the restaurant, making it look silly and shabby. Not to mention with the dominating yellow color that covers all angle. Just ridiculous.

Loving Hut - Broccoli Lada Hitam

However, I have to apologize sincerely to Loving Hut for underestimating it and the moment of truth came when I was assigned with this piece about healthy food. Of course, the only one that came into my mind was this Loving Hut. It’s pretty much nearby where I live and it survives for several years now. It has potentials after all perhaps!

Indeed it was. I was quite satisfied with what they have in the menu as it covers many genres from local, Chinese, and even Italian. They have strange names in it to avoid people thinking that they serve meat but of course not because they substitute it with processed soy beans.

Loving Hut - Green DelightA friend of mine has a good point about vegan restaurants that offer dishes using processed soy beans to make it appear like meat. If vegans want to eat meat that much, why not do it for real instead of eating these processed soy beans? Well, I don’t have the authority to say anything about it but if you guys happen to be vegans, feel free to share your thoughts about it.

By the way, I had a healthy vegetable juice which was refreshing alongside a kung pao dish and broccoli with black pepper sauce and mushrooms. My wife had a maki set because she loves sushi and its friends so much. Well, it was decent and very affordable. You can have a date while spending around let’s say IDR 50,000 – IDR 60,000 if you want to be frugal and boy, these soy beans do taste like meat!

Loving Hut - Tasty Kung Pao

That experience alone made me think that being a vegan or any other derivatives of it can be fun in the end. You don’t have to worry eating sautéed dishes, grills, or even soy beans with meat flavors after all, right? Well, feel free to disagree my dear vegan friends, but if it’s allowed and still healthy, I guess why not?

Roger and out!
