The Iconic: Soto Ayam Ambengan Pak Sadi (Asli)

When a restaurant is putting the face of the owner as its public image, it’s only natural think that there’s a notable persona who was or has been contributing immensely for its current stature right now – legendary or not.

At times it might be just a marketing gimmick, as such in the case of nowadays snacks or small businesses. But when we are talking about Soto Ayam Ambengan Pak Sadi – there’s more to it than just a face.

Pak Sadi and his famous soto restaurant are two things inseparable. His establishment is the embodiment of Pak Sadi’s hard work through the ups and downs of his life since the adolescent days more than 50 years ago. Born in the vicinity of the small town of Lamongan, he was already taught to cook the town’s specialty soto and East Javanese’s pride – tahu tek-tek.

Like what happens in many parts this country for years now, the citizens of rural Indonesia have always been attracted to live in big cities. Once arrived, many of them saw their dreams shattered once realizing how tough it is living in a metropolis, but some persevere and made it to the top like Pak Sadi.

If several issues ago we have the story about how Pak Misjaya jumped off the train to seek his fortune in Jakarta with only the clothes he was wearing that day and now that he runs a very successful nasi ulam business, Pak Sadi started it less radically than that thanks to his cooking skill.

But it is not without a lot of hardship.

“There was a time when I was forced to relocate and that people were simply not interested with my food. I don’t know where else to go but I was glad to have a generous friend who asked me to stay at his place and set up my business again there”, reminisces Pak Sadi.

After some time standing on his feet again, he finally started fresh with a humble vendor on Jalan Ambengan. Finally after several years, Pak Sadi had his breakthrough moment of success when he eventually can afford his own house there and the street became known nationwide as a branding name for anyone who want to start their soto Lamongan business.

“Quite some time ago, I tried to get the “Ambengan” name patented but I was denied since I cannot use the name of a public street for my soto. That’s why I put my name and the word asli for the restaurant to differentiate it”, says Pak Sadi.

From his modest beginning at Jalan Ambengan, Pak Sadi has since expanded his empire to several cities all over Indonesia with his strongest bases at Jakarta and Surabaya. “My first ever outlet in Jakarta is here at Jalan Wolter Monginsidi. We moved around for several times but this time I suppose we have become permanent”, shares Pak Sadi.

Now, as a grandfather of eleven, Pak Sadi is enjoying his retirement days and travel between Jakarta and Surabaya a couple of times in a month. He is now delegating the business to his children who are actually making his traditional business more colorful.

“My son Hartono is brimming with ideas. He opens Soto Pak Sadi outlets in shopping malls and expands it beyond the borders I knew back then”, he says. It is no wonder now that we can now find more traditional street food at Pak Sadi’s Wolter Monginsidi outlet. It was all because of his children’s initiatives.

Pak Sadi himself is true to his words when he’s talking about his soto recipe. In his restaurant, you will find yourself facing a generous serving of soto ayam Lamongan with complete offering from ayam kampung, half of hard-boiled egg, vermicelli, and optionally with a lot of koya made from real prawn crackers.

Indeed, there’s more to it than just Pak Sadi’s face on the billboards or the plates used at his restaurants. Pak Sadi started it seriously and now his restaurant is known as the true name behind any soto Ambengan you can see around – on par with other top soto from all over Indonesia.

That alone is already a huge contribution of this country’s massive culinary legacy and his heritage continues still thanks to a great family teamwork, very much likely until far in the future.

PHD Presents The Real Cheeseburger Pizza!

Setelah sekian tahun dimanjakan oleh gesitnya layanan pesan antar dan berbagai variasi pizza-nya yang selalu menggoda, kini PHD kembali memperkenalkan kreasi pizza terbarunya – Cheeseburger Pizza!

Setelah Hawaiian Chicken Pizza yang begitu saya dambakan, rupanya kali ini PHD bermain dengan popularitas makanan khas Amerika yang menggunakan bahan dasar beef patty sebagai bintang utamanya.

Ya, apalagi kalau bukan burger. Tidak hanya itu, makanan khas Italia yang sudah akrab dengan lidah kita selama bertahun-tahun ini tentu lekat dengan makhluk lezat bernama keju. Di sinilah PHD kembali mempertunjukkan kebolehannya.

Nah, rasa cheese burger tentu sudah lekat dengan selera makan penghuni kota besar di Indonesia. Bagaimana tidak? Di saat berkumpul ramai-ramai atau terjebak dengan perut krucuk-krucuk di saat-saat ganjil, apa yang lazim diingat biasanya adalah pesan antar burger dan sejenisnya.

Kini, PHD dengan Cheeseburger Pizza-nya bisa menjadi pilihan penyelamat kelaparan!

Tapi seperti apa sih sebetulnya Cheeseburger Pizza itu?

Bicara soal komposisinya, Cheeseburger Pizza ini terdiri dari berbagai topping seru yang sebelumnya belum pernah terbayangkan oleh seorang penggemar pizza dari PHD maupun Pizza Hut seperti saya ini.

Sebagai contoh, ambillah ukuran sedang maupun besar dari Cheeseburger Pizza ini. Pinggiran yang biasanya berbentuk orisinil atau diisikan sosis maupun keju ini kini diimbuhi oleh banyak patty berukuran kecil. Sedikit spoiler buat kamu, patty yang saya nikmati betul-betul berasa seperti daging asli. Dengan racikan pintarnya, PHD berhasil menggabungkan daging sapi dengan berbagai bumbu sehingga patty ini tidak hanya gurih dan berisi, namun juga tetap juicy.

Sebagai topping utama di lingkaran pusat pizza ini, dapat dipastikan trio daging cincang, jamur, dan paprika mendominasi segala penjuru. Selesai dipanggang, rupanya proses finishing masih terus berlanjut. Kali ini pizza yang sudah matang dan wangi ini lalu diimbuhi dengan berbagai potongan keju cheddar di seluruh bagian. Nah, bayangkan keju yang sedikit demi sedikit meleleh karena panas dari pizza yang telah matang.

Untuk penutupnya barulah PHD memberikan imbuhan terakhir berupa mayones dan potongan daging sapi serta herbs untuk menambah rasa serta wewangian dari Cheeseburger Pizza!

Kalau ini masih belum cukup, jangan lupa untuk mencoba paket Mantap Special untuk ukuran Regular maupun Jumbo, karena keduanya akan ditambah dengan dua gelas minuman dingin pilihanmu serta empat puff pastry yang diimbuhi beef patty serta keju!

Untuk yang mencari ukuran kecil tentu tidak ada masalah, karena PHD sudah menyiapkan pizza ukuran Personal dengan tambahan dua beef puff. Bedanya pizza ukuran Personal ini tidak ditambah dengan pinggiran khusus seperti di ukuran Regular dan Jumbo. Jangan bersedih karena beef patty tetap akan ditambahkan di empat penjuru pizza ini sebagai topping-nya.

Sudah cukup tergiur? Langsung saja telpon PHD di 1500 600, sang penyelamat kelaparan dan dijamin 30 menit tiba (jika tidak, dapatkan 1 voucher gratis pizza)!

Dish That I Crave: Walnut Crush Pancake/Mille Crepes

The layered mille crepes were already smooth and silky as it is. So, this is a great substitute than the pancake itself. Initially I felt as if I was burdened with the overly sweet flavor but as I dug my way through, I can suddenly feel the harmony of everything. The walnut and the ice cream of course, made it even more wonderful.

This was simply awesome!

I’d like to have this again for my Iftar dessert. Hopefully I can make a visit to Pancious soon! 😉

Staycation: Midtown Hotel – Surabaya, Indonesia (Midtown Indonesia)

True to its name, Midtown Hotel is located in the heart of Surabaya. My last visit was may be in 2012 but there’s a good attachment with my experience back then for one night as a traveling customer far from Jakarta in search of a decent, strategically located hotel.

Jalan Basuki Rahmat is more than you could ask in terms of location. It’s nearby to shopping malls, good places to eat in Surabaya, and the most modern part of the city. It’s almost as if Surabaya is well designed than even Jakarta here.

Midtown Hotel stands tall as a new hotel in an era where budget hotels were just recently introduced in big cities all over Indonesia. In Surabaya, this is the best that I could find in terms of the price and the previously mentioned reasons that budget or business travelers would choose for their lodging’s criteria.

The Superior Groovy room was well presented, modern, and clean. It was comfortable, cool enough to withstand Surabaya’s notorious climate, and has a good view of the city. The bathroom was simple but everything was well placed. I have no objection at all.

The breakfast was okay, although that’s what you should likely expect from budget hotels. I like the overall new feel of the building and it’s a kind of feeling that may beat even the 5 starred hotels of the 1990s nowadays (but not the food though!).

To sum up, it was a pleasant stay and Midtown will always be a good choice for my next budget trip there next time. Even so, as time goes by, the development of new hotels are extensive in Surabaya so I heard. That way, maybe I will (still) reserve my spot to the best bidder.
