10 Fun Things to do During Island Hopping from Hiroshima to Shikoku (Halal Navi, 2017) [ENG]

It seems like the charm of Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto as three of the most famous tourist destinations in Japan is difficult to surpass. But why not try something different? Let’s venture a little farther to Hiroshima prefecture (yes, wherein lies the city of Hiroshima that was bombed during the Second World War!) and from there, to the island of Shikoku!

The Nishiseto Expressway that connects Hiroshima and Shikoku has several world record breaking suspension bridges Via JNTO

What’s special about crossing to Shikoku from Hiroshima is the island hopping through Shimanami Kaido (or also known as Nishiseto Expressway). It is a 60 km toll road that connects the main island of Honshu to Ehime prefecture on Shikoku. The route begins from Onomichi (Hiroshima) and bypassing six out of nine islands of Geiyou before reaching Imabari (Ehime). For now, we will only stop by and venture around Ikujichima and Oshima island for this island hopping trip!

Start: Onomichi, Hiroshima

Onomichi is a historical city which did not experience any bombardments during World War II and that makes it a home to many classic heritages that are still intact until this day. So let’s begin the Island hopping from Onomichi city!

Tips: Cycling is a popular way of doing this island hopping and you can return the bike at any point along the Shimanami Kaido route. To start, a bicycle rental terminal can be found near Onomichi Station with rental fee ¥1,000/day. The other alternative is by riding a bus from Onomichi to Imabari and you can cycle later on from Imabari to Oushima. I personally tried the second way.

Pro tips: if you are a professional cyclist, enjoying the route of Shimanami Kaido by cycling from Onomichi to Imabari is definitely worth a try!

1. Viewing Onomichi from the heights of Senkou-ji Temple

When you’re in Onomichi, you can pay a visit to Senkou-ji Park. It is located on the hills of Daebo 140 meters above the sea level. Other than being a park full with cultural heritage, you can visit Senkou-ji Temple and Onomichi City Art Museum that are located within the park.

To get here, you can either walk or ride a cable car (Senkoji-yama Ropeway). While you’re up there, why not enjoy the city view by visiting Senkou-ji Observation Platform. It’s free and still in the Senkou-ji park area! Make sure to visit during Sakura season, we guarantee you won’t regret coming all the way to Onomichi.

Be sure to spend some time visiting Hotel Cycle, a modern hotel designed for cyclists. The hotel occupies one part of a giant warehouse from the World War era that has been renovated. It shares space with a bookstore, restaurant, coffee shop, bakery, and of course – a bike shop. The whole establishment is called Onomichi U2 and it’s a must place to hang out for the hipsters and take those Instagram-worthy pictures!

The first island we will visit is Ikuchijima. Here, we can visit the pristine small town called Setoda.

3. View famous Japanese paintings at Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art, Setoda

As the name indicates, the museum belongs to Ikuo Hirayama – one of Japanese legendary artists known for his Japanese-style painting (painting technique which uses mineral pigments dissolved in Nikawa, some kind of liquid glue).

The themes of his paintings evolved around the scenery of his hometown (Setoda), what he seen around the world, Buddhism, and shitazu (rough sketches). Ikuo Hirayama himself was once named as a UNESCO ambassador and advisor for the world heritage project. Better not to miss the chance to visit his museum while here!

There are various types of fresh seafood that we can choose here and have fun grilling them yourself by using shichirin (a traditional Japanese grill). Don’t worry about doing it yourself because the staffs are there to help you grilling the seafood to perfection. Be sure to try different types of shellfish, local fish, shrimp, abalone and even geoduck. Why Superfood Can Save Your Eyes, Research Suggests

Within the spectrum of visible lights, the blue light is among that has the highest energy. It is actually found everywhere like for example when the sunlight collides with air molecules in the atmosphere, that causes the sky to go blue. On a smaller scale, the blue light is also found on electronic devices such as laptop computers, cell phones, or the LED lights and fluorescent bulbs.

While the blue light has its benefits such as boosting our alertness, helps our cognitive function, and even elevates our mood; it also has its downside. Among which is something that many of us might be unaware of – it is hazardous to our eyes.

The macula functions as the filter of harmful light for our eyes and as it degenerates, we may experience the loss of vision. It is currently the leading cause of blindness in the West and an estimate of 1 in 10 people over 65 suffers from advanced age-related macular degeneration.

On the bright side; superfood is known as the source of nutrients with large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. We see many kinds of superfoods now on daily basis as they are incorporated with modern culinary techniques to create not just for an alluring presentation or the usual important features such as textures or taste, but also for their health benefits.

Macular degeneration can be fought by consuming more lutein and zeaxanthin found in superfood, and this is based from the recent study by Harvard University. Several types of superfood vegetables with the highest quantity of lutein and zeaxanthin are kale, cress, spinach, peas, asparagus, and more.

Rated as an ingredient with the highest count of lutein and zeaxanthin, kale is easily the most famous among superfoods. It is ubiquitous and can be obtained in local markets quite affordably. From appetizers to main courses, kale is a highly versatile ingredients fit for everyday use. Professional chefs love to play around with the ingredients and there are a lot of easy recipes for us to try.

For more information about macular degeneration, you can check this elaborated infographic below. Let’s keep our eyes healthy with superfoods!

10 Hal Seru Selama Island Hopping Menuju Shikoku (Halal Navi, 2017) [BAHASA]

Titik awal: Onomichi, Hiroshima

Berrywell: Jakarta’s Freshly Made Healthy Lifestyle (mise en place, Vol 18 – 2017)

While Bali may have been the first and foremost in Indonesia when it comes to wellness and healthy living, Jakarta is quickly following the same path. Despite its whole different stature compared to Bali and also known as one of the busiest capital cities in the world, the latter is actually linking itself comfortably with the healthy, post-industrial lifestyle.

Known for its smoothie bowls and cold pressed juices, Berrywell has opened up three outlets and each has its own specific demography to serve. Opening up strategically while staying relevant with the market are the keys for survival, explains Kareyca Moeloek as one of Berrywell’s owners.

Its first outlet was opened inside Fairgrounds of SCBD – an important business district in the heart of Jakarta. Of what used to be a place for nightlife for decades, Fairgrounds has transformed itself as one of the pioneering lifestyle hubs in Jakarta. Here, Berrywell is competing to cater a crowd who would specifically look for healthy treats after exercise or for the fast-paced businessmen who would seek fulfilling yet healthy lunch.

berrywell2
Meanwhile at Plaza Senayan, Berrywell is serving the unpredictable mall-goers who may not always have specific target in mind when it comes to where to eat, but the shopping mall is a representation of Jakarta’s wealthier class on the south, which in the end works right with what the store has to offer.

Lastly, its latest outlet at the newly opened lifestyle hub Shophaus on the wealthy neighborhood of Menteng is probably the most suitable of all. The neighborhood itself can be easily reached by people coming from the northern part of the city. “But it’s not without its problems”, says Kareyca.

berrywell4
Equipments, especially hand blenders and cold press juicers, are prone to breakdowns admits Kareyca. Quality yield as well as after-sales service and availability for spare parts are important factors taken into consideration before choosing the equipments. As for the logistics; Berrywell utilizes the speedy, reliable, and affordable online motorcycle taxi service to tackle not just the traffic but in case of immediate request for restock from the outlets. Lastly, proper education and confidence to instill upon younger, inexperienced employers are also paramount, especially since Berrywell is very open for part-timers.

There’s a specific standard of design for every Berrywell’s outlet and the one at Shophaus is the smallest. “We are operating with two freezers here and we had to work around the space to make it comfortable not just for us to work but for our customers as well,” explains Kareyca while showing the concealed parts of where they store the ingredients.

berrywell3
As for the menu, Berrywell utilises local ingredients whenever possible especially for the fruits. The use of coconut water in some of their smoothie bowls menu and cold press juices portrays the characters of Berrywell strongly. Native to Indonesia, coconut is considered as super food and it works nicely with Berrywell’s formula of fruits, vegetables, and imported berries and grains.

Social media technology plays an important part to further introduce Berrywell’s existence to the world.
