Cover Feature: Craving For Crustaceans – The Manhattan Fish Market (The Foodie Magazine, May 2014)

MFM 3

As a Singapore franchise, Manhattan Fish Market was launched in Jakarta a few years ago. Since their restaurant concept was all about serving the diversity of seafood and having the freshest catch of the day, their name is inspired by New York’s famed Fulton Fish Market.

MFM 1

Seafood has always been known to be colorful in presentation and they should always be. That’s why one should not dare to miss the seafood platters that have become the signature dishes at MFM.

MFM 2

With so many combinations of the platters, the flaming lobster set for us is the biggest treat, complete with fish fingers, garlic herb mussels, and fried calamari, it will definitely end the hunt for great seafood lovers. Another MFM delight is the Manhattan Flaming Prawns which made us fall in love instantly. The fancy dish is all about perfectly grilled tiger prawns and fries blanketed with a rich and special mayonnaise sauce, flamed with the torch, you can enjoy sweetness from the caramelization. Even before that, MFM will make you excited with the whole torching process. Surely you can imagine what happens to the dish after thoroughly served to you? Squeaky clean!

Foodie Flicks: The Scarecrow (2013)

In a dystopian fictional future, quite really close to our current reality, the protagonist Scarecrow is getting tired of working for a food factory under disguise of anything natural or organic. He sees so much behind the screen of those pretentious food products and that there are animal cruelty done in the name of productivity. Until one day, the Scarecrow decides to start his own way, organically and back to basic. From here, he wants to inspire the rest to start ‘cultivate for a better world’.

Well, it’s the face of the current America (or perhaps the rest of the world) with the food industry and its GMO produce that profits billions of dollars every year. It’s an eye-opener for an animated short film and powerful enough to convey the message in just under four minutes of its duration. Not to mention that the short film is also empowered by the harrowing atmosphere created through Fiona Apple who sings the soundtrack ‘Pure Imagination’.

The Scarecrow 1

If you already watched Food Inc., then consider this one as pretty much the same but shorter and more colorful (although it’s still dark anyway), The Scarecrow is a must-watch for those who care about what we eat, what everyone is eating, and how the food industry should behave.

PS: Despite of the controversy behind the initiator this video, which was Chipotle – a famous Mexican chain restaurant, in the eyes of the Americans. Let us just instead learn from the message found in the video and share it if you care or even better, act your own way or together, against the machine.

By the way, The Scarecrow as a game is downloadable for iPhones and iPads.

How It Was Started: Martabak Toblerone and Martabak Nutella (Martabak 65A)

Around last year, Jakartans were developing some sort of intense madness towards a spin-off of the usual martabak recipes and that was because of the use of Toblerone or Nutella as the alternate toppings.

During my coverage for The Foodie Magazine last November, I instantly received the revelation right away from the owners of Martabak 65A. Danniel, the second generation owner, actually confessed that initially they were about to shift into delivery business after Eid last year.

“We have bought two motorcycles and learn the know-how of delivery business, but I decided to give it an earlier start for our new recipe using Toblerone and Nutella”, said Danniel.

In no time, the innovative recipes soon drove Jakartans mad and one may queue for around two hours just to get their share of martabak. Thanks to Danniel’s activity on social media promoting about it, even more people came by to see the mythical creatures themselves. While you might be on the conservative side for martabak, it’s actually interesting to test a new angle with the concoctions – especially when that involves the legendary Toblerone, Nutella, and also Skippy.

“Perhaps by now, the motorcycles are already blanketed with dust”, said Danniel laughing about it.
