Qraved’s 2013 Jakarta Dining Index
You want the big number? The Jakarta dining industry grew 250% over the last five years. That’s not just a surprising factoid; that’s a minor economic tidal wave. With that kind of growth, Qraved.com put their finest minds to work sifting through the data coming out of Jakarta’s restaurant revolution.
Here are some fast-and-furious culinary tales from Qraved’s 2013 Jakarta Dining Index – the place where data meets the dining table:
There are two things that form a burning obsession in the heart of Jakartans: social media and food. Of Jakarta’s diners, 7 out of 10 are on Instagram, 8 out of 10 are on Facebook, and 9 out of 10 are on Twitter. The data isn’t conclusive, but it’s safe to assume that 10 out of 10 of these diners posted jealousy-inspiring #FoodPorn shots of
their meals before eating.
A phrase like ‘People in Jakarta like to eat out.’ doesn’t do justice to what a serious group of gastronomic groupies Jakartans are. According to Qraved’s estimates, Jakarta diners ate out 380 million times in 2013. Together, they spent $1.5 billion USD dining out in 2013 – or, by comparison, Jakarta’s diners spent the same amount of money dining out as the entire annual GDP of Antigua.
This one comes as little surprise: diners are twice as likely to eat out in the twin-trend capitals of Kemang and SCBD as they are to eat in any other Jakarta neighborhood. But don’t be deceived! Other Jakarta dining districts are serious contenders for the throne. Dining numbers in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Kelapa Gading, and Kebon Jeruk are big and getting bigger by the day.
While arguments about which bakso kaki lima is the best are debates that will never be resolved, sit-down diners are taking a thoroughly international approach to food. Restaurants that serve an eclectic international menu were the most heavily booked in 2013, with Chinese, Italian, French, and Japanese taking the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place spots. Of the 10,000 diners surveyed, over 15 international cuisines were represented.
“Nothing – not a conversation, not a handshake or even a huge establishes friendship so forcefully as eating together.” People who live in Jakarta understand that quote, by novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, better than anyone else. 48% of people who made reservations in 2013 booked them for groups of four or more, with another 19% eating as a trio. Only 33% of reservations were for parties of two, making Qraved fear for the romantic lives of their diners.
Reservations (and romantic hopes) skyrocket in the weeks leading up Valentine’s Day, which is one of the most active times of the year for restaurant bookings and dining out.
